Muramba

The community in Muramba was founded in 2004 and is a nunnery.

After the stating years of the order “Missionaries of Peace of Christ the King (MPC)” in Janja, the memebers extended and found a fitting area in Muramba: Sister Donata, the founder of MPC, was headmistress of the “college de l´Immaculée Conception de Muramba”which is an katholic secondary school run by sisters of the order Benebikira. This is how Sister Donata knew the location and helped the MPC opening a new convent in this region.

Since 2007 the convent runs a center for children and young adults with dissabilities. Both mental and physical. It works like a school. The children, aged from 12 to 25, have timetables, exames and get final reports. There are 3 sisters caring after the children as well as 5 little sisters in progres of becoming future sisters. The 40 students, 22 female and 18 male, learn also from 3 external teachers how to use sewing machines, how to craft pullovers and do creative things.

The students fabricate for example sweaters, scarfs, shoes, shirts and trousers as school uniform for the “college de l´Immaculée Conception”. Therefore the centre qualifies the students as well for reparing clothes and shoes. Last school year there was a total ordering of 350 trickots. The money for this service gets managed by the convent in order to run the school sustainably and independently the following years.

In addition the children and young adults learn to produce baskets, plates, bags, handicrafts for tableblancets for people living in the surrounding district as well as for visitors of APAX.

From the beginning of the existence of the center the studetns had the possibility to stay internal on the campus. In order not to have a long walking way home and the guarantee of a good care in living conditions, preparing food and having a programm outside school. Since 2018 the children sleep in a new build dormitory by the sponsorer Renama Platinate. Out of 40 a number of 8 students life near the Center so a homestay is a better option for them. Due to the concept of this center beeing a school the nuns expect an amount of money for running the center. Some of the students can afford this, most of them are coming from poor families who even did not appreciate theses children beeing their kids because of their handicap.

That is what APAX Muramba wants to provide: Sensibilisation and Acceptance of minorities and weak members of the community as well as inclusion and public support of the poor. The nuns acieve this by visiting community members at home, speaking about handicapped children and explainig their position as a helper in the mission of God. They bring values to families and the community such as tolerance and love towards each other. After teaching the studetns crafting and sewing many of them find jobs and are even a help at home due to bringing monthly salery. One girl for example who was a studetn in Muramba is now teaching the newcomers, anothother one teaches in Kabaya in a center for handicapped which has even no coherasion to the MPC. All in all due to Muramba the nuns want to spread acceptance and understanding for people having a handicap, mentaly or physicaly by showing of what the students are capable of.
